Western culture and adventure

Twenty five is too few, but let's be glad we have at least these! In the panic of the eruption, I try to grab items that span the range of culture and adventure in the West. They are at once practical, artistic, inspirational, and utilitarian.

This gallery has 25 objects

To get us started, consider this table. Functional, and yet SO Western. Also, you can put some of the other items on it while you're saving them.

The eruption will instantly kill the 5000 buffalo living in Yellowstone.

Another remnant of the buffalo. This one is worth saving for the forehead (look closely, or read the description).

This is perhaps too large to carry, but let's assume the adrenaline from the eruption makes it possible to carry anything. Then I'm bringing this favorite statue from the courtyard at the Center of the West.

This Ghost Dance dress is an example of fine craftsmanship and native culture.
View record »

Another fine shirt. This one belonged to Red Cloud.

One more item of clothing -- vest is best!
View record »

These moccasins are made from buffalo hide and decorated with beads and porcupine quills.
View record »

This is both a pipe and a tomahawk! Definitely throw it in the "To Save" pile.
View record »

This is a whistle made of eagle bone and *wrapped* with colored porcupine quills. I didn't know you could wrap quills. It also serves to remind us of the many items tagged "triangular" that we could not save.
View record »

This is a collapsible basket! And something that looks like a sandal. It's not clear why they're together, but they are. If you have trouble carrying everything, use the basket.
View record »

A bag containing early gamer's dice. It's not too much to carry, and it contains other items! Check out the full record to see them.
View record »

Another single item that consists of other items! An arrowhead, beads, and coins.
View record »

Not your standard headdress. This one starts with a felt hat and adds eagle feathers, horse hair, and other decorative items. Check out the other pictures for a better view.

An impressive and beloved hat. Bring it both as a symbol of cultural assimilation and as a comfort to any surviving staff of the Center of the West.
View record »

A precursor to the beaded trucker had, c. 1900.
View record »

End of the Trail. Proud and sad at the same time.
View record »

This poster of Annie Oakley will be easy to carry, and she is definitely worth remembering!
View record »

There are already plenty of guns in the world, but this one belonged to Annie Oakley.
View record »

During her show, Annie Oakley would shoot these target coins from the air! This is so small it almost shouldn't count as an item, but it has a tremendous presence.
View record »

Annie Oakley's outfit. After the civilization is rebuilt, this can be used to make an accurate life-sized statue of her.

We would definitely want to save some things from the Cody Firearms Museum. This calendar is light and easy to pack, but displays a number of products that you probably didn't realize the Winchester company made: knives, hatchets, pliers, fishing equipment, roller skates, ice skates, headlamps, and flashlights, to name a few!
View record »

We must save at least one poster from Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. This one is not too big (only about 4 feet wide) and includes detail of various parts of his show.
View record »

I couldn't resist including this poster: Rough Riders of the World in a Grand Ethnological Congress! The same tenacious and inspiring spirit we call Western is present in every culture.

The Colt revolver is a classic and just the thing to wrap up this collection. It's feat of engineering, and yet beautifully simple in its action. An excellent tool for its job of either protection or aggression. There are too many varieties to save them all, so just grab one that has the wear of daily use.
