Lightweight buckskin ankle extensions sewn to uppers with a welted seam, buckskin thong ties pass through corners of uppers on either side of tongue and wrap around andle multiple times, sinew sewn. Vamps have 10 quillwork rows in red, yellow and natural with colors arranged to form a rough yellow V surrounded by red with the natural in the center. Schloss | Braintanned buckskin upper portion in 4 pieces each with "tail" folded to outside at top. Fold wrap beaded in white, green, yellow, clear pink and black. Tails painted green and edges are lazy stitch beaded in white, green, yellow, clear pink, black and navy blue. Lower half of upper portion has a beaded Aemrican flag motif on a yellow, pink and green flagpole with a butterscotch, white, clear pink and black leaf on each quarter. Bottom of bag is braintanned buffalo with a mostly contour beaded eagle in yellow, clear pale green, clear pink, turquoise blue, butterscotch and royal blue on a lazy stitch beaded background of white with red and yellow triangles at top and bottom and red and clear pale green blocks at sides. Double row of buckskin fringes sewn at bottom of bag. Slash pockets in each side of front have a narrow lining of dark hair then white canvas pockets. In 1835 the artist George Catlin illustrated the Mandan Buffalo Dance. It was part of the larger Okipa ceremony in which men wearing buffalo masks mimed the hunt and took on the power and spirit of the animal in an effort to bring bison to the nearby grasslands. 1.69.2566 | L: 48.875 in, width: 46 in | Irving H. "Larry" Larom Collection | Long buffalo leather coat, brain-tanned and yellow ochre dyed. Zig-zag edged flaps in shoulder seams. Zigzag edged shawl collar overlaid with baby buffalo(?). Furred collar (machine pieced and probably cut from another garment). Zig-zag bottom edge. Short fringes along upper left front edge and sleeve ends. Longer fringes in back shoulder seams and back side seams. Of two remaining buttons, one is brown horn 1" in diameter, the other is a mother-of-pearl ear bob approximately 1" in diameter. Sleeve seams are welted and have remnants of red wool binding around cuffs. Center back is split to thigh level with a square of yellow buckskin and a square of red wool, both with zigzag cut bottom edges. Sewn over top of cut with 3-paired buckskin thong ties along stitching line. Near right shoulder blade is a red 17. Shoulder seams are also red lined.
