Coe | Split horn, feather bonnet with trailer. Tanned hide skull cap, covered with yellow pigment, beaded brow band in in white pony beads with 4 blue pony beads triangles, brass bells above it. Skull cap covered with bundles of eagle and hawk feathers - some clipped. Two split bison horns on skull cap, each has been carved with teeth on outside edge. Horns were connected together on each side with two strings of seed beads on sinew in striped sections of dark blue and white. The tip of one horn is broken off, and not attached to the two strings of beads. Between the two horns, a 13"L Commander feather extends from top of skull cap - carved with small diagonal lines at bottom, top is wrapped in sinew and has eagle down feather and dark red dyed horsehair (replacement - seen on other objects) attached. Mass of feather bunches on front of cap, red dyed feathers added to front above brow band - replacement pieces. Four (4) ermine tubes hang from either side of cap, along with 3 and 4 full possible owl feathers. Attached to back of cap is 63"L red wool trailer. The first segment of trailer has 16"L piece of canvas cloth sewn on by top edge, both sides of canvas are edged red cotton cloth, and cut away on the bottom. On either side of cloth are flat bundles of horse hair in two sections - five total on each side. Single trail of 32 golden eagle feathers runs down center of trailer, punched through the wool strung each wrapped in rawhide, red wool and strung on leather strip, and supported by long piece of hide under the wool. Each feather is tipped in dyed yellow horse hair (replacement - same color hair seen on other bonnets). Coe | Three or more pieces of hide made into long triangle shape, seamed on both sides, beaded/quilled panel inserted, and a small top portion, with narrow opening that is more recent repair with new hide string as drawstring, and appears machine stitched don hem with black cotton thread. Panel is outlined in glass seed beads in 3/8" W border majority white with small boxes interspersed of dark blue, red white heart, and green beads. The center of the panel is 13 horizontal single rows of red dyed quills with center boxes of cream outside with blue squares that form a large V pattern vertically. Bottom section is 2"L rawhide slats quill wrapped in red majority with six (6) long vertical boxes of cream with single purple vertical line. Row of 3"L hide fringe attached, overlaid on top with tin cones inserted with dark red dyed horse hair. Plain on verso. Beaded brow band appears to have been attached upside-down; white ground with inverted tipi designs in red/blue/yellow; bells, metal beads on upper edge; multi-colored bead edging. Yellow, green silk ribbons behind temples. Pink/green/yellow quilled dangles (appear newer) with tin cones, red feathers attached to brow band. Top of cap covered with dyed orange feathers (appear recent); plume has orange fluff and newer orange feathers glued on. Coe | Cow bone hairpipes, two (2) sections with 45 pieces each. Strung vertically through tanned hide strips through dark, heavy tanned hide pieces - two (2) per section for a total of 4. Two sections are separated vertically by 43 rows of brass and heishi beads - on same leather strips. Two (2) cobalt blue glass beads are tied on the perimeter of each side of every leather strip and heavy tanned hide section. Three (3) leather strips around neck are strung with intermixed cobalt blue glass and brass beads. Ornament at top portion/center of: abalone disk strung with 2 elk teeth, 2 quill wrapped leather strips with 4 copper colored metal cones and yellow dyed horsehair, and commercial made red, white and blue vertically striped ribbon. Attached half way down, center is 3" L carved bone or tooth. Added to bottom is hide bound, quillwork strip with base of rawhide in red, cream and light purple in geometric design. Coe | Swept back style bonnet, canvas skull cap inside lined with pieced checkered cotton cloth with red edging; outside is covered khaki colored cloth with red and beige geometric abstract pattern, and red edging on bottom edge. Two (2) ties on either side of brow band; made from cotton twine. Three (3) ermine tubes attached to one side of brow band; six (6) on other side, all wrapped in red wool cloth and cotton thread. Some have ribbon fragments tied on at bottom (pink or dark blue)1 ½”W x 11 ½” L brow band is tanned hide with majority white seed beads, nine (9) metal studs on lower edge, four (4) tomato red dragon flies intermixed with dark blue buildings with red interior door. Bottom edge is intermixed light blue and translucent purple; red and dark blue intermixed on upper edge. Bonnet had numerous golden eagle tail feathers, and fluffs. All quills have bent rawhide strip as base through cap, then majority have red wool wrapped around base with cotton twine tied around. Nine of the front plumes have base also wrapped in bead tubes of majority white with three yellow and blue chevron stripes in peyote stitch. Commercial metal piece with hollow center for a twirling guard feather on top of crown. Quill wrapped commander feather from back of cap leading to the red wool cloth and leather full trailer of 28 cloth wrapped eagle feathers tipped in burgundy dyed horse hair and tipped with ermine fluff on both sides of feather. Wood stick tied in approx. half way down the trailer. Coe | Long, narrow shaped piece of tanned hide, with rounded corners. Edges and bottom are covered in black cotton fabric – adhered with glue. Black wool cloth at front-bottom through slits in cotton fabric, serve as tie straps. Short piece of pinked wool attached to other end. Opposite end has red and blue ribbon looped though black cloth on for chin tie strap. Assorted (16) feathers adhered to top around the perimeter, standing upright, with edges pinked. Around base of each are feather fluffs in white, purple and pink. In the center, behind upright feathers are short bundles of red dyed horse hair. Majority of the upright feathers have white fluffs attached to the ends; near the top of same feathers are translucent sequins and singe beads tied on with cotton thread. Eagle feather is attached to center recto, through a metal tube. Coe | Split horn bonnet with short red wool cloth trailer. Skull cap of commercial felt covered with short ermine strips, beaded headband 1"W of tanned hide added. White and red white heart glass seed beads in alternating triangle pattern - red on bottom. Split bison horn - inserted through the felt skull cap. Horns are tied with red, yellow, pink ribbon strands at the top, red dyed feather fluffs, red horse hair on tips, and a cotton string runs between the two with 5 small brass bells attached. At the base of each horn, on the cap, are yellow, red, pink, navy blue ribbons strands, dyed and clipped feathers in pink and red. At rear of cap are two bundles of ribbon in red, yellow, blue. A short red wool cloth with serge end visible trailer is stitched in to the back of the skull cap. First layer is long strips of ermine hide, covered by nine (9) golden eagle feathers wrapped at quill in red wool and cotton twine - one empty cloth casing. Next layer is 30 ermine tubes, wrapped at base with red wool cloth and cotton twine. Coe | A) catlinite, round in cross section, L shaped with no anterior projection, small protrusion carved out (3/4”L) on bottom, near bend. Bowl is tall and wider than neck. Shank opening is edged in lead, with four (4) lead in lay dots to inside of the lead edge. B) single piece of wood, dark wood, portions burnt for a darkened effect. Carved into three spindles at the top and bottom, solid center section is wrapped with strip of raccoon fur. Six (6) brass tacks embellish to recto at shank, mouthpiece and two on each side of sold center area. Hide strip tied on to the bottom, with two (2) tin cones with blue dyed horse hair inserted attached to end. NA.203.1580 | ca. 1890 | H: 18 in, Diameter: 8 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Straight-up feather bonnet. Stiff piece of hide, made into circle, lined with cotton cloth on interior, and red wool cloth on exterior, and two sets of leather ties at back. Ermine tufts and some red dyed feather fluffs at the base of the upright feathers. Front has three rows of brass tacks around lower perimeter onto the red wool. Top edge has tufts of ermine skins attached, and then top edge has golden eagle feathers, wrapped at base with red wool cloth, and standing upright from the leather base. Each feather has a piece of rawhide attached to it with thread, and the rawhide is wrapped in wide horizontal stripes of embroidery floss in red, yellow, purple, cream. Tips of some feathers have strands of dark purple horse hair attached, and tipped at base with small piece of ermine hide. One upright strand at the front of bonnet is covered with dark purple feather pieces. Where the circular base meets at back, two piece of red wool are sewn on either side, and trails down approx. 14". Numerous ermine tubes hang from the sides and around the back of head piece base.
