Ghost dance dress - white buckskin dress, sinew sewn, rectangular strips pieced into shoulders, yoke/sleeves sewn to skirt, triangular extensions sewn at lower side seams to give skirt more flare; self fringe at side seams, added fringe at sleeve ends, self and added fringe at hem. Upper 3/4 of dress is painted blue with blue outlined natural buckskin stars in rows, painted green band separate blue upper dress from bottom 1/4 which is painted yellow-groups of 4 line and circle designs extend into yellow from green band, bottom edge has a red line with triangles pointing up, outlined with blue, triangular extensions have 2 rows of blue dots and 1 row of red dots at bottom. Yoke has laced-in fringe across front and back, fringes are trimmed with mescal seeds, ermine tails and feet, dyed red breath feathers and satin ribbons in fushia, blue, golden yellow on back, red, blue, faded light blue and faded pink on front, front also has an advertising mirror from Herbert Spencer cigars and a sinew wrapped lock of black hair. Coe | Stand up style Blackfeet feather bonnet. Rawhide strip is basis for headpiece band (no crown), covered with red wool cloth on exterior, and cotton muslin on interior. A strip of tanned hide is attached to two sides on interior, as way to keep securely on the head. Front edge and around crown is tanned hide, back portion are two flaps that meet and are backed and edged in cotton cloth. Front headband has two horizontal rows of silver colored metal tacks, 28 total (one replacement). Base of head piece has bald eagle feathers attached - base of quill wrapped in rawhide, the whole wrapped in red wool cloth, then wrapped at top and bottom in pericardium strips. A hide strip is strung over and under between all feathers near the center to keep in place. Base of wrapping has short ermine strips attached and red feather fluffs inserted, and brass bells attached (13 now in place). Each of the 30 feathers have been ochred, and some have been trimmed to a narrower profile. Tip of each feather has ermine tuft adhered to exterior along with red feather fluff and horse hair tuft. On either side of head band are ermine tubes, wrapped in same manner as feathers with some red feather fluffs. Three (3) white rabbit fur patches, red feather fluff, orange dyed horse hair on each feather. Beaded brow band on canvas backing, appears new. Yellow ground, black and blue arrow designs, red triangles, trimmed with blue/black bands. Beaded rosettes at temples: proper left side pink/black tube beads, green/red/turquoise faceted beads; proper right side appears new, red and black sunburst pattern on white ground. Feathers are wrapped and stitched in red commercial leather. 2 ¼" W added brow band - majority white with three (3) green mountains with red steps and med. blue doors outlined in white. Two (2) round 2 ½" dia. leather disks on either end of brow band - beaded in light blue background with bison in center and 4 small tipis in white with red doors. Coe | Beaded cloth headband, with two horns attached to either side, and two bundles of magpie white tail feathers, and split owl feathers attached over ears. The split horns are wrapped in dyed and plain porcupine quills in wide stripes, and the tips have plain horse hair with small ermine strips, single small red dyed feather fluff. The edges of the headband have full and split black iridescent magpie wing feathers. Hanging from the middle of the headband is 27" long triple braid of bison hair wrapped at top and bottom with small strip of red wool and small strips of ermine hide. The headband is beaded in majority light blue with four (4) dusty rose tipis with narrow green doors, dark blue stepped outline. Also has three (3) green square crosses with red translucent centers. Entire headband is trimmed in small, bright red glass tubes beads. Bottom of headband is finished in purple cloth. Quill of feathers are wrapped with woolcloth and white tape (tape is wound in spiraling fashion around red cloth.) NA.205.107 | late 19th century - early 20th century | width: 9 in, L: 23 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Head piece with all parts sinew sewn (through punched holes) into segment of a commercial leather belt to go on top of the head, and tied on with leather thongs. Pieces include wood carved to resemble split bison horn on either side of head, beveled and painted; cut feathers (either eagle or turkey) tipped with ermine fluffs. There are traces of contemporary glue adhered the feathers together and possibly the ermine to feather tips. The exterior of the belt is covered with a 1"W otter fur strip. Hanging from the back are long pieces (18"L) of otter fur, red wool cloth (14"L), shorter ermine strips and one piece of leather cut into strips - on either side of head- that are wrapped with quills in segments to look like seeds or beads.
