Coe | Feather bonnet with carved, split horns. Cap is tanned hide with rawhide strap across crown; covered in smaller eagle body feathers. Horns carved into flattened shape, attached to cap, painted on underside with red pigment/paint. Orange fluffs attached to brow band area (recent addition, not original). Proper right temple has tied bunch of eagle body feathers, magpie and owl feathers, two tail feathers, ermines; proper left temple has eagle tail and body feathers, owl feathers, ermines. Red wool trailer 54” in length, eagle feathers secured with rawhide loops to hide tie; white horse hair attached to tips. NA.203.1438 | 1950s | bonnet height: 18 in, overall height: 21 in, circumference: 27 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Golden eagle feather bonnet. Tan felt cap; feathers attached with leather loops; red wool wraps with cloth tape bands, white and red feather fluffs at each base; dyed red feather, hide circle and white horse hair at tips. Beaded brow band; orange ground with light blue and pink banded triangles. Beaded rosettes at temples: Pink, green circles faceted beads, red tube beads, clear white bead trim, red tube bead “fringe.” Metal button at center rosettes with wood beads strung on hide, pink and white feather fluffs at ends. Ermine strips tied to cap behind rosettes; two (2) braid of human hair, tied off in red wool cloth, stitched to cotton cloth and sewn into back of bonnet. Coe | Golden eagle feather bonnet. Composite piece. Felt cap; eagle and dyed turkey feathers attached with rawhide loops; green wool and corduroy (recent addition) wraps secured with cotton string; white and bright green feather fluffs (recent addition) at base of feathers. Beaded brow band, recent 20th century addition; white ground with multi-colored tipi designs; red edging. Owl and hawk (?) feathers attached near temples with string. Coe | Golden eagle feather bonnet with hawk feathers. Brown felt cap; feathers attached with rawhide and parfleche loops; red and green wool wraps with brass bells at top, white and pink feather fluffs at tips. No brow band; Dark leather trim with silver metal studs around circumference. Quill covered circle with four directions cross inside, four pink quill accents at temples. Hawk feathers with quills wrapped in green thread tied below temples. Smaller golden eagle body feathers tied to top of cap with cotton string. NA.203.1437 | ca. 1920 | L: 16 in, cap diameter: 24 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Swept back style bonnet, canvas skull cap inside lined with pieced checkered cotton cloth with red edging; outside is covered khaki colored cloth with red and beige geometric abstract pattern, and red edging on bottom edge. Two (2) ties on either side of brow band; made from cotton twine. Three (3) ermine tubes attached to one side of brow band; six (6) on other side, all wrapped in red wool cloth and cotton thread. Some have ribbon fragments tied on at bottom (pink or dark blue)1 ½”W x 11 ½” L brow band is tanned hide with majority white seed beads, nine (9) metal studs on lower edge, four (4) tomato red dragon flies intermixed with dark blue buildings with red interior door. Bottom edge is intermixed light blue and translucent purple; red and dark blue intermixed on upper edge. Bonnet had numerous golden eagle tail feathers, and fluffs. All quills have bent rawhide strip as base through cap, then majority have red wool wrapped around base with cotton twine tied around. Nine of the front plumes have base also wrapped in bead tubes of majority white with three yellow and blue chevron stripes in peyote stitch. Commercial metal piece with hollow center for a twirling guard feather on top of crown. Coe | Golden eagle feather bonnet. Felt cap; eagle feathers attached with rawhide loops -- some with pigment from parfleches-- orange dyed horse hair with orange adhesive at tips; red wool wraps with black string; white feather fluffs at base of feathers. Beaded brow band appears to have been attached upside-down; white ground with inverted tipi designs in red/blue/yellow; bells, metal beads on upper edge; multi-colored bead edging. Yellow, green silk ribbons behind temples. Pink/green/yellow quilled dangles (appear newer) with tin cones, red feathers attached to brow band. Top of cap covered with dyed orange feathers (appear recent); plume has orange fluff and newer orange feathers glued on.
