1.67.475 | ca. 1895 | waist circumference: 37 in, outseam length: 42.25 in, inseam length: 29 in | Gift of The Coe Foundation | Brain-tanned buffalo, commercial pattern cut with set-on waistband with suspender buttons, 5 button covered front fly with hook and eye at top, slash pockets in front, V'd center back with short 2 pronged clasp belt, bound edge inset back pockets, fringed the full length of side seams which have a 12 button flap opening from the knee down; machine sewn with white and dark yellow threads; blue striped white twill waistband lining with white muslin inner pockets, upper lining with white muslin inner pockets, upper lining (to just below crotch) and fly and leg flap facings; button holes stitched in dark yellow thread; suspender and front fly buttons are 4 hole stamped pot metal, leg flap buttons are brass with rounded tops with federal eagle trailing a banner; machine sewn hide patches-2 lower left rear, 1 top of left leg flap, 1 upper left front, 1 lower right rear, 1 upper right front. Condition: Heavy and stiff but show little wear; excessive added surface dirt. Missing 1 fly button, 2nd from bottom does not match. Missing far left front suspender button and rear suspender buttons. Missing bottom button from right leg flap. Origin: Not identified in the 1967 catalog or 1916 Ogdensburg Public Library catalogue as such but photographic evidence proves these trousers were worn by Calamity Jane. See 1.67.188 and 1.67.477 for Calamity Jane's vest and coat. Jacket is brown, appliqued purple triangles on each shoulder. Shawl collar is grey/green in color with purple trim which extends to bottom hem, beige thread wrapped around trim. Collar has purple applique designs of stylized brands. Cuffs are of same grey/green color with purple trim, fringe on back seams. Applique and embroidered design around bottom quarter of jacket of 2 cowboys on horses herding cattle, mountains in background. Belt has fringe at each end. Jacket is lined with brown silk. Thread belt loops at side seams. Interior ties on each side. Plaster arms and head with painted features and brown hair. Dress of black twill in 1890's style, machine sewn, trimmed with black satin ribbon cuffs and black satin ribbon chevrons with black satin covered buttons at ends (2 on bodice, 3 on front skirt panel). White tatted collar with a 3 rhinestone decoration. Two petticoats of white cotton - outer has 2 narrow tucks and lace at hem, inner has eyelet at hem. White cotton pantaloons with 2 tucks and lace trim. White knitted stockings and hand-sewn black leather shoes with bows. Condition: Several small chips missing from back of head. Origin: Purchased from Mary Jester Allen and Helen Cody Allan, niece and great-niece of Buffalo Bill.
