Hand-tanned elk hide, fringed on neck flaps, shoulder area, wrist area, bottom edge of shirt, down sides of shirt, and down back of arms. Painted in red, light blue, dark blue and green pigments. White stars with red line surrounding them, dark blue birds, dark blue and white magpies, white turtle with red blocks on its back, background of shirt is light blue. Fringes on shirt are all painted green. Red human figures on front and rear. Neck flaps have plants and pipes, figure's chest has crescent shape and feather on top of head. NA.108.160 | ca. 1870 | Diameter: 19 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Rawhide (probably cow or deer hide - due to its thinness) shield tightly covered with painted hide cover. Shield is covered with ochre, and has tanned hide tie through the front of shield. Cover has red wool cloth attached along the top (3"W x 18"L), tied through with 7 short hide pieces and three brass bells in the center. Eleven (11) dark thin feathers (raven, magpie?) tied into center of red wool. Tanned hide cover has ½"W black vertical stripes along bottom 2/3s and on upper 1/3. Fine green horizontal lines run across cover about 1/3 down. Two (2) green and black stylized bear paw w/claws are set to the left in upper black stripes and lower right in lower black stripes. Perimeter is ¾" W green stripe, with finer black stripe on either side. In the center of shield is cut out of stylized grizzly bear (Crow style) 7 ¼" L painted blue with bundle of split and yellow dyed owl feathers. One, tied-off, tanned hide strip is sewn through the left middle side of cover, nothing attached. Seven (7) eagle feathers are attached along lower half. Coe | Feather bonnet with carved, split horns. Cap is tanned hide with rawhide strap across crown; covered in smaller eagle body feathers. Horns carved into flattened shape, attached to cap, painted on underside with red pigment/paint. Orange fluffs attached to brow band area (recent addition, not original). Proper right temple has tied bunch of eagle body feathers, magpie and owl feathers, two tail feathers, ermines; proper left temple has eagle tail and body feathers, owl feathers, ermines. Red wool trailer 54” in length, eagle feathers secured with rawhide loops to hide tie; white horse hair attached to tips. Coe | Hand game rattle, ten (10) game sticks, two (2) game pieces. Rattle has hoop shaped head of tanned hide, painted yellow with blue lines, red dots. Fringed at outer seam. Golden eagle feather, two (2) magpie feathers attached to head. Handle wrapped in imitation black fur, blue yarn, green cloth strips. String of brass bells attached. Two (2) eagle feather fluffs and one (1) magpie feather attached to end of handle. Five (5) sticks painted red at bottom, yellow on upper. Five (5) sticks yellow on bottom, red on upper ¼. All have green thread wrap, parrot and other feathers tied at top with hide thong. Game pieces would be hidden in hand for guessing. Golden eagle wing and tail feathers, magpie feather, attached to head. Handle wrapped in imitation fur, blue yarn, green cloth strips, multicolored cloth strips tied at center. Brass bells on hide thong along handle. Two (2) eagle feather fluffs and one (1) magpie feather attached to handle end. Five (5) sticks have magpie feathers tied to top with sinew; other five (5) have flicker feathers tied to top with sinew. All have black thread wraps and yellow hide tie, painted yellow at bottom, upper 1/3 red.
