Coe | Pair of leggings numbered as (a) and (b). One large piece of tanned hide, rounded and pinked on one edge, pinked on one side. Folded over ¾ to expose the pinked edge, then folded to a rectangle for legging from ankle to knee or perhaps higher. Repurposed beaded strip added to outer edge of leggings: 3 ½" W and 20 ½" L. Strip is outlined in widely spaced white pony beads. Beaded segments are alternating 4 vertical line reps of seed beads of red and white, short segment of rose and green, longer segment of shiny dark green and yellow and repeat rose/green and red/white. Pink and green separated by 2 thin rows of black. Metal cones with horse hair at black lines. Strips are attached with dark cotton thread, and rather poorly. Strips hang down past unfinished bottom approx. 1 ½" for decorative look. Coe | Swept-back bonnet. Red felt skull cap. 26 golden eagle feathers wrapped with hide string radiate around skull cap. Tips have attached red-dyed and yellow-dyed hair and also feather fluffs that appear to be contemporary. Front strip of hide has a bead pattern in blue, white, green, and red. Blue may be "box" pattern and red design may be "filled up" design. 8 short hide strings hand around front of brow band and have metal cones wrapped around ends with a bit of short red-dyed horse (?) hair. Feather fluffs in the front above brow band are red, pink, and purple and appear to be contemporary. Coe | Four thin pieces of tanned hide, fully beaded, and stitched together to make a bridle. Iron bit is tied on with hide strips at bottom. 1 1/8" W long strip goes around ears and ties at bottom for bit. Two (2) 18"L x ¾"W strips are tied to browband/ear strap off either side of head. Two (2) round beaded tanned hide disks (2 ½" dia.) are at the connecting point of the two main points. Red ribbon and hide strip wrapped in dyed porcupine quills and finished with tin cones and red feather fluffs. Browband is 1 7/8"W with tin cones attached all along the bottom with red feather fluffs inserted. Red ribbon attached in the middle of browband with two (2) quill wrapped strips, finished with tin cones sewn into center of ribbon. No throatlash or noseband. Seed beads in majority white background with various geometric designs overall in dark blue, med. green, white heart red, and yellow. All edges are beaded in single line in the same colors for long segments of one color. Coe | Cow bone hairpipes, two (2) sections with 45 pieces each. Strung vertically through tanned hide strips through dark, heavy tanned hide pieces - two (2) per section for a total of 4. Two sections are separated vertically by 43 rows of brass and heishi beads - on same leather strips. Two (2) cobalt blue glass beads are tied on the perimeter of each side of every leather strip and heavy tanned hide section. Three (3) leather strips around neck are strung with intermixed cobalt blue glass and brass beads. Ornament at top portion/center of: abalone disk strung with 2 elk teeth, 2 quill wrapped leather strips with 4 copper colored metal cones and yellow dyed horsehair, and commercial made red, white and blue vertically striped ribbon. Attached half way down, center is 3" L carved bone or tooth. Added to bottom is hide bound, quillwork strip with base of rawhide in red, cream and light purple in geometric design. Seven sets (14 total) of metal cones on cotton thread inserted with red feather fluffs on perimeter of sheath. Beadwork is majority white with 10 deep blue triangular designs, bordered with lines on either side - two rows of five running vertically on upper portion of case. Lower is band running on perimeter in white with seven (7) dark blue or black "I" shapes figures interspersed with six (6) small green squares. Flap is beaded on perimeter in white majority, and one side in black interior edging and two long squares; other half is blue with same design pattern. Both sides in beaded in stripes of white, green, red white heart down length. Front is beaded 4"L, and 2" down from top. Coe | Cow bone hair pipes, six (6) sections with up 11 hair pipes in top 4 sections, and 29 in lower 2 sections. Top four (4) sections are separated in middle to allow room to be placed over head. All pipes strung vertically on tanned hide strips, heavy tanned hide separating sections. Blue and green glass tubes beads strung on cotton thread into a woven pattern for top neck tie, green/red multi-colored beads intermixed, tied off with teal ribbon at back of neck. 3" dia. shell at top of 5th section. NA.106.938 | ca. 1900 | L: 30.5 in, width: 6.5 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Tanned hide of small animal, probably dog, with all four (4) legs intact and tied off on the ends and three (3) leather strips wrapped in burgundy dyed quills, ending with metal cones and burgundy dyed horse hair. Two additional quilled disks (1 ½" dia.) two rows single stitched in burgundy with yellow center, and single green quill wrapped tassel and ending in three (3) burgundy wrapped strips with metal cones w/ horsehair inserts. One disk is same side as legs, other is on the upper - towards end. Top opening is 5 ½" W (one side) and 2 ½" L quilled strip with single width row of medium blue beads on top and bottom of quill work strip. Seven (7) rows of single wide quills in majority burgundy with geometric boxes in dark green and yellow. Down from the quill strip is rawhide slats, wrapped in majority burgundy, and some yellow and green slat.
