Ghost dance shirt - muslin shirt, long sleeved, hand-sewn with black thread, self-fringed at side and underarms seams, shoulder seams, hem, sleeve ends and neck edge, muslin fringe V sewn at front and back, gathered at sleeve ends and neck with fringed slit at back neck. Shirt is colored with red ochre (possibly) in bands at sleeve ends and elbows, alonge fringes and inside front and back V's, front V has an uncolored horizontal crescent moon in lower point. Front and back V points have a single eagle feather and a bunch of blue and yellow dyed breath feathers tied to cloth and a green dyed twisted thong. Tied at top of each shoulder with a twisted green dyed thong is a single eagle spike feather. Tied at underarm seam at the elbow is a bundle of green dyed thongs with small brown feathers and split owl feathers, sinew wrapped to ends of thongs. Brain tanned and smoked buckskin uppers and soles, thread sewn with welted seams, rectangular tongues and ankle wraps have zigzag notched edges. Applique beaded vamps have a foliate design with 3 leaf-like designs near tongue in medium blue with cut metallic centers, royal blue outlines and connecting lines also connect to 3 bud designs near toe in clear lime green with yellow centers and royal outlines banded on either side with yellow on the connecting lines; other branching lines are beaded with clear red and cut metallic silver, medium blue and milky white and cut metallic silver. Inserted in ankle seam is a navy blue wool cuff with red muslin edge binding. Ghost dance dress - muslin dress, T top with A line skirt, hand-sewn, dress is basically one piece front and back the width of the muslin with rectangles sewn at T ends to lengthen the sleeves and triangular inserts sewn into lower side seams to add bottom flare. Front and back have a rust painted V yoke, back yoke has painted border stripes of green, yellow and rust, neckline is gathered on a muslin tie with back slit. Front and back bodice have green painted vertical stripes, the last stripe falling on the seam where sleeve extension is added. Sleeve ends and hem have 1 stripe each of green, yellow and rust. On center front of skirt is painted a blue bird with blue and green out-spread wings. 1.67.475 | ca. 1895 | waist circumference: 37 in, outseam length: 42.25 in, inseam length: 29 in | Gift of The Coe Foundation | Brain-tanned buffalo, commercial pattern cut with set-on waistband with suspender buttons, 5 button covered front fly with hook and eye at top, slash pockets in front, V'd center back with short 2 pronged clasp belt, bound edge inset back pockets, fringed the full length of side seams which have a 12 button flap opening from the knee down; machine sewn with white and dark yellow threads; blue striped white twill waistband lining with white muslin inner pockets, upper lining with white muslin inner pockets, upper lining (to just below crotch) and fly and leg flap facings; button holes stitched in dark yellow thread; suspender and front fly buttons are 4 hole stamped pot metal, leg flap buttons are brass with rounded tops with federal eagle trailing a banner; machine sewn hide patches-2 lower left rear, 1 top of left leg flap, 1 upper left front, 1 lower right rear, 1 upper right front. Condition: Heavy and stiff but show little wear; excessive added surface dirt. Missing 1 fly button, 2nd from bottom does not match. Missing far left front suspender button and rear suspender buttons. Missing bottom button from right leg flap. Origin: Not identified in the 1967 catalog or 1916 Ogdensburg Public Library catalogue as such but photographic evidence proves these trousers were worn by Calamity Jane. See 1.67.188 and 1.67.477 for Calamity Jane's vest and coat. Tan hide blanket with a muslin lining has red tradecloth on either end of body and across the back end, decorated with seed beads of light and dark blue, pink and white in two large geometric designs which are identical on either end, with zigzag points running the length of the body of light and dark blue and white. Small mulit-colored bells trim the outer edges of the red ground (some are missing). Sequins dot at intervals, outlining the geometric designs. Short fringe (1") trims the length of the body of back and long fringe (30") hangs from either end.
