With the title Days of Long Ago Farny wistfully places the scene in some distant, but not specific time. Farny's vision of the Indian rests in tranquility. | LRC: Sketch for/"Days of Long Ago"/Farny/ (circle) 1903 | Paint over edge of paper mounted on board | Pamphlet: Cody, Wyoming Relocation Guide; Cody Chamber of Commerce, Cody, Wyoming; 2004; inside back cover | 6.75.jpg | 6.75.jpg | 6.75.JPG | 6.75.jpg | 6.75.jpg | 6.75.web.jpg | Indian | Landscape | Group | Animal | Painting | oil on paper mounted on board | Farny, Henry

Davidson | By painting a night scene, Bierstadt emphasized the affects of snow on the distinctive shape of Long's Peak. This study resulted from Bierstadt's two-week sketching trip to Estes Park, Colorado. Between December 23, 1876 and January 9, 1877, the artist studied "the park, with all its marvelous natural beauties" and made "sketches of winter scenery and effects in the high mountains." | LR: ABierstadt | See Hassrick and Trenton, The Rocky Mountains, page 145 and footnote 133 on page 366, for documentation that the site is Long's Peak and for the dating during a known trip of Albert Bierstadt's to Estes Park. Messmore | By working in oil Bierstadt was able to do color sketches as he traveled, using the portable support of paper. He applied the paint thinly, leaving brushstrokes apparent, especially in the sky. Because paper is not a strong support for the heavy medium of oil, sketches like this are often later mounted on a heavier board. | LR: ABierstadt | needs photography | 13.60.JPG | wagon train | Painting | oil on paper mounted on board | Bierstadt, Albert

Bierstadt was sometimes criticized for his inventive and dramatic translations of the landscape. His studies, however, were greatly admired by critics as more truthful renderings than his monumental exhibition pieces. | Bierstadt, Albert
