1988.8.350 | ca. 1935 | L: 42.25 in, Barrel length: 22.75 in | Due to wide use in World War I, the bolt action rifle became popular in America during the 1920s. A concurrent interest in precision small bore competitive shooting led Winchester to produce the Model 52. Designed by Thomas Crossley Johnson, the Model 52 has become the leading arm in small bore accuracy. It is available in a variety of styles and weights, and has a magazine capacity of 5 cartridges. This Model 52 rifle is one of a sample lot made in Winchester's experimental shop, before fixtures were ready for regular production. It was made in 1919 for a shoot at Caldwell, NJ, and placed in the factory collection on October 25, 1921. Special features include: snap-on sling mounts, serrated trigger for pull and over travel, and receiver tapped for scope mounts. | Needs inscription and dimensions. | Lyman rear sight. 1988.8.330 | ca. 1940 | L: 45.5 in, Barrel length: 26 in | Gift of Olin Corporation, Winchester Arms Collection | Announcement of the new Winchester Model 42 hammerless slide action repeating shotgun was an innovation. It was the first shotgun with this type of action ever developed especially for the 410 gauge shell. Factory records show the first delivery of Model 42 shotguns to warehouse stock was made in May 1933. Although the Model 42 in design and appearance closely resembles the Winchester Model 12, it was not a copy of this model but was in all respects a small, lightweight shotgun developed especially for the 410 gauge. The M/42 was discontinued in 1963; about 159,353 were made (Watrous: 1966). The receiver and magazine of this Model 42 have been cut away with numerous windows on both sides to demonstrate the internal mechanisms. | [barrel left] Made in New Haven, Conn. The M/60A Target rifle was a well constructed and accurate arm. But because it was too lightweight to meet the demand for a low-priced accuracy rifle, it never had a large sale. 1988.8.383 | ca. 1937 | L: 43 in, Barrel length: 27 in, width: 6.5 in | Gift of Olin Corporation, Winchester Arms Collection | The Winchester Model 68 rifle was a companion to the Model 67 and differed from it principally in sight equipment. It was first offered for sale in 1934. In 1937, rifles with Winchester 5-power telescopes were authorized. These rifles were equipped with telescope bases attached to the barrel. The Model 68, due to its more expensive sights, sold at slightly higher prices than its companion rifle, the Model 67, and consequently had a considerablly smaller volume of sale. Manufacture of M/68 rifles with 5-power scopes was discontinued in 1939, and the standard Model 68 was discontinued in 1946.
