Upper portion painted blue, lower portion yellow with yellow, orange and brown lines in between. Triangular tabs on front and back of neck decorated with red and blue wool and beading in white, red, blue, green, turquoise and yellow. Lazy stitch beaded strips over shoulders and on each sleeve. Panels with turquoise diamond designs on dark blue ground also with white, green, yellow, red and pink on strips. Upper portion and sleeves also have small beaded squares in red and pink or turquoise and yellow. Human hair bundles run over shoulders and on sleeves, most dark but some light horse hair bundles. Bundles wrapped with undyed porcupine quills and attached to blue beads. White pony beads strung on hide thong between claws; hole drilled into each claw. Abalone shell, copper pieces folded to form cone, and hide thongs with porcupine quill wraps all attached to top of trailer. Trailer consists of ten (10) long strips of otter hide and fur; red ochre applied to underside. Coe | Man’s hide vest with quillwork and ribbons. Vest constructed from three pieces of hide with smaller additions towards lower edges; seams top of shoulders, sides. Hide fringe sewn on bottom. Front opening trimmed with red silk cloth; arm holes trimmed with green wool cloth; lining white cotton cloth. Front adorned with flag motif on PL, symmetrical abstract floral/leaves and faux pocket outlines in red, purple, green, and natural (un-dyed) quillwork on both sides; three red quillwork designs with purple outlined holes on upper PR may represent wounds. Silk ribbons (blue, red, yellow) pinned with metal sequins or discs. Reverse: Symmetrical design layouts on each half of abstract leaf and floral designs. Two (2) wrapped, thin strips attached to top ends and either side of bottom section. Each has metal cone on end with remnant of dyed feather fluff. Each strip on bottom section has metal cone with feather fluff inserted. Thin hide straps at top to serve as neck tie. Red feather fluff remnant (1) at color change intersections in quills. Seamed flap has 3 rows of varied colored quill work. Flap and sides are outlined in ½" W beaded strip in sky blue alternating with dark blue boxes with gold center in seed beads. Flap has only 3 remaining sets of 2 metal cones w/ feather fluff insert attached to 1 ½" strips of colored rawhide, with 1 blue seed bead; otherwise plain colored rawhide strips remain on flap with cotton thread. Coe | Was in exhibition catalogue "Native Americans: Five Centuries of Changing Images" - plate 74. Full cap bonnet of bison hide w/ hair on, brow band edged in red wool. Short (9 ½") trailer of bison hide with hair on attached to headpiece. Three (3) rows of (4) four bison hair tufts per row on trailer. Shaved down bison horns on either side of headpiece; one painted red, attached with hide. Quill wrapped 4 spoke discs on either side, majority white with red at where spoke meets wheel. Four (4) hawk feathers hanging from each side strung on tanned hide, green and blue glass tube beads mixed in to feather grouping. Coe | Four thin pieces of tanned hide, fully beaded, and stitched together to make a bridle. Iron bit is tied on with hide strips at bottom. 1 1/8" W long strip goes around ears and ties at bottom for bit. Two (2) 18"L x ¾"W strips are tied to browband/ear strap off either side of head. Two (2) round beaded tanned hide disks (2 ½" dia.) are at the connecting point of the two main points. Red ribbon and hide strip wrapped in dyed porcupine quills and finished with tin cones and red feather fluffs. Browband is 1 7/8"W with tin cones attached all along the bottom with red feather fluffs inserted. Red ribbon attached in the middle of browband with two (2) quill wrapped strips, finished with tin cones sewn into center of ribbon. No throatlash or noseband. Seed beads in majority white background with various geometric designs overall in dark blue, med. green, white heart red, and yellow. All edges are beaded in single line in the same colors for long segments of one color. Coe | Green stained wood, pipe bowl attachment end of base of stem tapers (21" L) down to three tubes, then solid (1 ¼" L) and the mouthpiece. Area immediately above the three tubes and on the solid piece below it, has male mallard feathers attached (approx. 2" L area) with adhesive and string. The three tubes have dyed porcupine quills attached by one stitch sewing line on the verso. The quills create a striped pattern in off-white, black, red, blue, and yellow.
