Coe | Trailer for bonnet, three pieces of red wool cloth sewn together, beige edging visible, no hem. Teal colored wool cloth, 3 ¼" at Widest hand sewn down center with tooth-cuts to hide string for feathers. 30 golden eagle feathers attached and strung with leather thong towards middle to stabilize. Four of the feathers topped with rabbit fur, dyed horse hair, red feather fluff remnant. NA.205.108 | ca. 1860 | L: 58.5 in, width: 19 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Tanned hide made into headpiece with 20" L that extends past the neck and down to a flap on the back ("helmet style"). Split wool trailer, with punctured hide piece attached to the headpiece, leather through wool to hold the feathers in place. Runs almost length of trailer 20 and 21 eagle each side, wrapped with teal embroidery thread, and orange dyed horse hair at base and on ends of feathers, along with rabbit fur (?) on tip of each feather to hide glue for hair (possible later restoration). Two brass bells, 1/3 way down on the wool, one on either side of wool trailer, are tied through with leather strip, also hold the leather piece on interior to wool cloth exterior. Cap has bison horn on each side of head tied to cap with string of blue and white pony beads, and horn topped with strips of ermine hide overall and yellow dyed horse hair wrapped with sinew. Coe | Skull cap made of wool cloth, covered on brow band with red wool, and 1 ¾" W beaded strip: white majority seed beads with three (3) full and two (2) half yellow tipis, edged in steps of dark blue. Center tipi has red square cross, tipis on either side have silver metallic square crosses. Bottom edged in brass tacks. Top is covered with white rabbit fur and a small fabric covered wooden hoop that may have feathers glued to it. Some strips of hide on front of cap with contemporary red feathers fluffs glued on. Two "horns" on either side of cap are carved wood strung through the interior of the cap, and also attached to each other over the top of the cap with a wire wrapped in same pink satin ribbon. Replacement dyed purple feather fluffs adhered to wooden loop. Bottom of "horns" are wrapped in pink satin ribbon, and covered with layers of glued on feathers, and topped with contemporary replacement dyed feather fluffs in orange and red. Rabbit fur "tubes" attached along the back portion of the cap with red wool attachments. NA.203.1652 | 1930-1950 | L: 15.5 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | commercial felt hat as skull cap; with brow band attached to front in tanned hide (3/4” W), beaded in majority light blue seeds beads with seven (7) stepped/squared triangles in red, pink, and black interior. Bunches of commercial ribbons on either side brow band – woven designs, light pink, cream, orange, dark blue, red, hide strips with feather fluffs on ends attached with cotton thread. Two plain hide strips – one either side – to tie on under chin. Thirty–three (33) golden eagle feathers around perimeter, quill end is looped though hair-on rawhide, and all wrapped in either light blue satin fabric or red wool boucle fabric, wrapped in two places in cotton thread. Ends of feathers have rabbit fur and yellow dyed curly horse hair – a newer addition. Feather fluffs cover the top/back of the skull cap sewn on with black thread. NA.203.1650 | 1975-1999 | L: 13 in, wide at widest point: 9.5 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | twelve (12) older immature golden eagle feathers, quill end looped with rawhide piece, then whole thing wrapped with thin dark brown strip of tanned hide. Four (4) of which have green feather fluffs inserted at base, one (1) with red colored feather. Feathers are strung on heavy cotton twine that is strung loosely though a piece of self- fringed tanned hide. On the end, an additional piece of hide (9”L) is attached with fine leather strip, small holes are punched though on both ends to attached. On the hide trailer, a line along the center where feathers attached - three (3) rows wide in yellow, burnt umber, yellow. Also a six-sided geometric design painted in burnt umber on additional piece with triangles painted in center (2 are yellow). Six (6) older ermine tubes are attached to trailer intermittently on both sides of the recto trailer. Feathers and ermine are repurposed. Hide ties for attachment. Coe | Bald eagle feather bonnet. Tan felt cap; feathers attached with plastic loops; blue and white string wraps, small white feather and red fluff at each base. Three (3) white rabbit fur patches, red feather fluff, orange dyed horse hair on each feather. Beaded brow band on canvas backing, appears new. Yellow ground, black and blue arrow designs, red triangles, trimmed with blue/black bands. Beaded rosettes at temples: proper left side pink/black tube beads, green/red/turquoise faceted beads; proper right side appears new, red and black sunburst pattern on white ground. Full ermines attached to cap behind each rosette. Coe | 38 turkey and immature golden eagle feathers in a trail, rawhide loop folded over bottom of quill, wrapped with red wool cloth and tied in 2 places with cotton twine, and has white feather fluff inserted. Machine sewn. Tanned hide laces pass through bottom of rawhide loop and through bottom portion of feather. Sewn onto strip of red cotton cloth, backed and edged with plain cotton muslin, and has canvas as inner cloth for substance. Each feather is tipped with rabbit fur, purple feather fluff and yellow dyed horse hair. Coe | Contemporary golden eagle feather bonnet. Tan felt cap; feathers attached with rawhide loops; red wool wraps with bands of tan cloth tape. White rabbit fur (?) patches, magenta feather fluffs at feather tips. Smaller body feathers at top of cap; long feather plume at center with turquoise and plain fluffs; feather drop tied with hide thong at back of bonnet, turquoise and plain fluffs at tip. Beaded brow band, white ground with red/green center and blue/red green center crosses; green/red edging. Beaded rosettes at temples, red/green/blue bands on white ground, green/red edging; purple ribbons at center.
