Ghost dance dress - white buckskin dress, sinew sewn, rectangular strips pieced into shoulders, yoke/sleeves sewn to skirt, triangular extensions sewn at lower side seams to give skirt more flare; self fringe at side seams, added fringe at sleeve ends, self and added fringe at hem. Upper 3/4 of dress is painted blue with blue outlined natural buckskin stars in rows, painted green band separate blue upper dress from bottom 1/4 which is painted yellow-groups of 4 line and circle designs extend into yellow from green band, bottom edge has a red line with triangles pointing up, outlined with blue, triangular extensions have 2 rows of blue dots and 1 row of red dots at bottom. Yoke has laced-in fringe across front and back, fringes are trimmed with mescal seeds, ermine tails and feet, dyed red breath feathers and satin ribbons in fushia, blue, golden yellow on back, red, blue, faded light blue and faded pink on front, front also has an advertising mirror from Herbert Spencer cigars and a sinew wrapped lock of black hair. Guilfoyle, U.S. Cavalry West Point 1877, Collection of American Indian Material. | Transportation: Land Transportation. Leather with two metal loops for cinch strap. Edges bound with red cloth which has deteriorated, floral head decoration on each corner in pink, yellow, blue, green and red on white ground; design for one end and a different one for the other. Flaps hang off each corner, bead floral decoration on canvas backing in blue, green, pink, red and yellow on white ground. Coe | in orange paint, on verso, corner: “46-78-5” | fully tanned hide in two (2) pieces, cut edges all around, seamed in center to create one piece. Box and border style design. Painted on recto in five (5) stripes outlining the perimeter: dark brown, light red, blue, light red, brown. Interior is intricate geometric design, with three(3) vertical extensions from top with box on top of each with three rows of two colored triangles stacked inside each box. All in same colors, plus yellow. Parts of the geometric center, have been recolored – most notably the brown area. Coe | Tanned hide cut straight at top. Straight down edge recto, Self-fringe verso. Cuffs have self-fringe with a wide triangle fringe sewn on to end with cotton thread. Hide strip sewn onto front comprised of white beads with 4 black stepped pyramid shapes. Legging "a" has one brass button along edge of this strip. Legging "b" has 3 brass buttons along edge of this strip. 6 small arrow shapes at both ends of the strip. Legging "a" two small white donut circles with one strand of blue and a blue and white crescent shape with a blue and red line extending from center. Tip of front has two stripes of white red and blue beads. Legging "b" has 4 donut circles, 2 blue with one white strand and two white with one blue strand. Coe | Hard sole, upper of tanned hide, straight cuff, hide tie at cuff, attached tongue is long, forked, beaded with tin cones and red dyed horse hair inserts. Cotton cloth edging (faded blue) over the top of the cuff, hand stitched with black thread. Six (6) dark blue triangular steps around perimeter, with white background between with three (3) red squares running vertically down center of each area. Center of toe has six (6) of the red squares. Upper has green majority, on vamp are two vertical stripes of white with one (1) blue step triangle with single red square on either side. The step triangle lies horizontally. The forked tongue is white with three (3) large red squares and top edge single row of red. Yellow ochre dyed buckskin upper sinew sewn to thick dark brown commerical leather sole, forked tongue. Beaded strip around bottom, across instep, down vamp and partially up heel seam is lazy stitch beaded with dark blue outlined light blue diamonds flanked by red/white hearts triangles on yellow strip with dark blue and light blue diagonal stripes between strips on vamp. Southern Arapaho ca. 1885; Ute according to Knoedler inventory. Condition: 4 nail holes through sole, 2 through tongue, 2 through left front corner of cuff.
