Ghost dance dress - white buckskin dress, sinew sewn, rectangular strips pieced into shoulders, yoke/sleeves sewn to skirt, triangular extensions sewn at lower side seams to give skirt more flare; self fringe at side seams, added fringe at sleeve ends, self and added fringe at hem. Upper 3/4 of dress is painted blue with blue outlined natural buckskin stars in rows, painted green band separate blue upper dress from bottom 1/4 which is painted yellow-groups of 4 line and circle designs extend into yellow from green band, bottom edge has a red line with triangles pointing up, outlined with blue, triangular extensions have 2 rows of blue dots and 1 row of red dots at bottom. Yoke has laced-in fringe across front and back, fringes are trimmed with mescal seeds, ermine tails and feet, dyed red breath feathers and satin ribbons in fushia, blue, golden yellow on back, red, blue, faded light blue and faded pink on front, front also has an advertising mirror from Herbert Spencer cigars and a sinew wrapped lock of black hair. Orange or purple ribbons on back of each shoulder. All of these elements indicate a formal piece of clothing with a nod to the natural world from which the Crow drew the basis of their beliefs and traditions. Coe | Tanned hide panted with yellow ochre, cut diagonally across top, into long rectangle including triangular flap, with 6 ½" L x 2" W notch cut out for bottom cuff - includes 1" of self-fringe. Self-fringed, twisted fringe on outer flap and lower cuff, up to 7" L. Side flap/leg delineated by pieces of fringe sewn through two sides of hide, and left long and twisted on verso. Decorated on entire recto perimeter (including cuff recto and verso) with narrow row of seed beads - white background with translucent red slanted bars in pairs overall. Recto: the outer edge, outside of bead strip and insert of cuff, has been painted green. 7 rows of green dots (6 to 7/row) on lower half of piece. Verso: Entire triangular flap is painted green, with the 6"L fringe delineating flap,. 4 rows of green dots (4/row) on lower portion. 2 green dots off centered near knee area. Coe | bow case: tanned hide, fur on in interior of both pieces, sewn into circular form with round piece on bottom, pieced with red wool cloth on bottom seam and some attached fringe. Double seam with added piece runs top to bottom. Five (5) single lines (1/4” W) of turquoise blue seed beads, with small striped segment of dark blue and yellow inserted, running horizontally around top and bottom. Twisted hide fringe attached to underside on top folded over edge. Quiver is same style and design pattern, but narrower. Attached to quiver with strips of hide strip in three sections, and tanned hide strap is (¾”W) attached through the same hide strips. Strap and strips are more recent additions. Bow: slight recurve bow, medium colored piece of wood, tapers in at handle, and again near top, notched ends; string is woven sinew, looped around to prevent strain on bow. Arrows (4): triple fletched, glued and tied off on top and bottom with sinew. Fletched portion is also painted on two (2) bows: red, blue and red striped; green or dark blue diagonal lines; to in dark blue.
