Hand-tanned elk hide, fringed on neck flaps, shoulder area, wrist area, bottom edge of shirt, down sides of shirt, and down back of arms. Painted in red, light blue, dark blue and green pigments. White stars with red line surrounding them, dark blue birds, dark blue and white magpies, white turtle with red blocks on its back, background of shirt is light blue. Fringes on shirt are all painted green. Red human figures on front and rear. Neck flaps have plants and pipes, figure's chest has crescent shape and feather on top of head. NA.505.106 | ca. 1900 | Diameter: 16.5 in, H: 2.75 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Single head drum, with wooden frame. Made from rawhide stretched while wet over the circular wooden frame, that is overlapped and sewn together with sinew through holes drilled in frame. Sinew fastens edge of head to inside of frame in long stiches around the perimeter through holes. Seven (7) cords - 4 rawhide and 3 tanned hide knotted from outside to inside meet in center knot, also braided with a cotton type twine for a hand hold. Recto and sides of frame are painted in dark green and black. Bottom 7" of face is painted over in black with distinct line separating the drum face. On upper corner of black portion is single red circle (1"dia.), possibly representing a rock, not heavy paint. Upper 9" of drum face is green shades with fades. Top flap and two side edges beaded in glass seed beads, lazy stitch, sinew sewn, in white, dark blue, yellow, tomato red geometric designs in bars, boxes and triangles. Metal cones with horse hair inserts hang from leather near beaded areas and from 3 long ties on flap.
