1988.8.528 | 1600-1680 | L: 54.75 in, Barrel length: 40.25 in | Gift of Olin Corporation, Winchester Arms Collection | This type of musket was used in Colonial America from about 1600 to 1680. Matchlock was the next step from hand cannons. Instead of having to hold the slow match to the powder-filled pan, a pull on the trigger lowered the matchholder and match to the pan. Because the match was guided to the powder, the musketeer could sight down the barrel and be somewhat more accurate in hitting his mark. The matchlock typically weighted 10-15 lb., used a 1.5 oz. ball and 23 gram charge. It could fire out to 250 yards, but was accurate at only about half that distance. (from Firearms Past and Present) | BARREL: UNKNOWN MAKER'S MARK. | A. musket; B. ramrod. .75 bore. The priming pan on this piece has a cover and flash guard. It is accompanied by an iron-mounted musket rest. | Austrian Matchlock Musket | 1988.8.528.jpg | colonial | Austrian | firearm | plain | iron | trigger | walnut | metal | musket | Austria | Unknown
