1988.8.584 | 1864 | L: 37.5 in, Barrel length: 21 in, H: 7 in | Gift of Olin Corporation, Winchester Arms Collection | This is the Ball breech-loading repeating carbine. About 1000 were made in 1864-1865, but it is doubtful if any were issued for Civil War service since they were not delivered until May 14, 1865. The piece loads and ejects from the side of the receiver. The magazine is below the barrel. It was invented by Albert Ball of Windsor, VT and patented under several numbers during 1863 and 1864. E.G. Lamson and Co. was organized out of Lamson, Goodnow and Yale of Windsor, VT, and manufactured the Ball carbine. | [on left side of receiver:] E. G.
