Coe | Men’s moccasins with quillwork designs. Tanned hide uppers, rawhide soles, seam at back of heel. Cuff is part of uppers. Separate tongue, angled with flat end. All stitched with sinew. Hide ties inserted in holes front of ankle cuffs and into center of tongue. Instep decorated with rows of yellow quillwork ground and simple design of two pink leaves, one purple leaf; leaves outlined with twisted quillwork detail. One row of red quillwork, with row of natural (un-dyed) quillwork below around perimeter of moccasins above sole. Stem end has five concentric bands, wider band midway between stem joint and base of bowl. Base of bowl carved so it appears to “wrap” around shaft. Five concentric bands near top, larger band midway on bowl. Coe | unfinished composite piece, newer in age, hide has smoky smell (indication of newness) and no aging to it. Piece of tanned bison hide (wider at one end, narrower at opposite), raw edges, partially completed. Glass pony beds on hide strips (4”W) attached to three (3) partial edges in majority white with intermittent stripes of wide black with thinner red lines on either side. Some newer beads intermixed with older. The attached beaded strips are hand sewn in large stitches with cotton thread.
