It was manufactured from 1854 to about 1857; approximately 500 were produced. There were two types manufactured with a total production of approximately 900. The following is from the original sales records of the Sharps Rifle Co. "Serial Number 158189--sold to the U.S. Cartridge Co. May 16, 1877, as a cartridge testing rifle". The Sharps Model 1874 was manufactured 1871 to 1881. The name "Model 1874" was applied later.
