6.14.1 | 1987 | H: 18 in, width: 24 in | Old Faithful | Anonymous Gift | LL | Theodore Waddell is well-represented in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West's collection, but this painting reflects a previously un¬represented aspect of Waddell's career - a landscape view of Yellowstone National Park. As an addition to the Whitney's collection, this also helps us develop a wider range of images of Yellowstone - this is decidedly more contemporary than the many traditional views of Yellowstone already in the collection. We are also grateful for Waddell's continued interest and support in the Center. | 6.14.1.JPG | Painting | oil on canvas | Theodore Waddell (b. 1941) Old Faithful 1987, oil on canvas Anonymous Gift, 6.14.1 | Waddell, Theodore

10.95 | 1987 | H: 66.125 in, width: 54.125 in, Frame height: 68 in, Frame width: 56 in | Horse #32 | Gift of Miriam and Joe Sample | "If I can by-pass my intellect which seems to demand certain things and deal with the information directly, purple horses do in fact appear and seem to be appropriate." Cattle rancher and artist Theodore Waddell paints range animals in freely-rendered abstractions and heavily textured surfaces. His atmospheric, layered work is an attempt to alter his perception of the world by manipulating color, form, placement, light, materials, and scale. | verso: HORSE #32 | verso, in script: Theodore J. 4.91 | 1986 | H: 60 in, width: 72 in, Frame width: 73 in, Frame height: 61.25 in | Buffalo #2 | Purchased by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and William D. Weiss. | Waddell distills images of western animals into basic shapes. This modern artistic approach simplifies objects to their essences. The application of paint in dramatic gestures reminds the viewer, however, of the artist's role in creating the image, rather than replicating something that exists. Although contemporary in approach, Waddell's powerful bison shape shares an affinity with Albert Bierstadt's nineteenth-century image, Buffalo Head, which also focuses on the shape of the animal. | on back: BUFFALO #2/ (in script:) Theodore J. Weiss, 4.91 With thick dramatic gestures of paint, Waddell simplified the image of the bison into its basic shape. He captured the animal's essence by focusing on the basic features: dark fur, rounded hump, pointed horns, and massive size. The painting is contemporary and abstract, yet the subject is still recognizable. | Waddell, Theodore
