Late in the summer, with the water low, the washed rock makes a nice contrast to the dark water. I made 2 trips from the road down the steep bank to the water. One trip with my painting gear, and the other with the 24” x 30” panel. This particular bend in the river is a favorite painting haunt for me. Not so easy to get to, but worth the effort! | 2.08.2.JPG | Landscape | Painting | oil on board | Kathy Wipfler (b. 1955) Indian Summer 2004, oil on board Bequest of Nancy-Carroll Draper 2.08.2 | Wipfler, Kathy

Rumsey Foundation | More than one hundred years after Thomas "Yellowstone" Moran memorialized the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River in the first monumental painting of the subject, Kathy Wipfler poised her canvas and paintbrush near the very spot where Moran stood. Yellowstone National Park has been an outdoor studio for generations of painters. Still today, artists travel to America's first national park to capture the unaltered beauty and wilderness. What was once a long and arduous journey to see the wonders of the landscape is now an easily accessible day trip on paved roadways and groomed walking paths. Wipfler painted the field sketch for this painting in late June of 2006 while tucked among trees off the beaten path of Artist Point. The large painting was completed later during the winter months in her studio in Jackson, Wyoming. Lower Falls of the Yellowstone is a colorful and fresh picture which captures the spirit of the landscape and awe-inspiring impression conveyed through the artist. | 10.07.jpg | 10.07.jpg | 10.07.web.jpg | Painting | oil on canvas | Kathy Wipfler (b. 1955) Lower Falls of the Yellowstone 2006, oil on canvas Gift of the Mary A.H. The view is looking up into Granite Creek, in the Gros Ventre Wilderness. The grizzly & cubs were drawn & roughed in on location (2 sessions on location) from gesture drawings I had in my sketch book. The piece was then finished in my Jackson studio. There are grizzlies living in the area, as the species continues to recover and expand territories once again. | LR | 2.08.1.jpg | Landscape | cubs | bear | Painting | oil on canvas | Wipfler, Kathy

Weiss Memorial Fund Purchase, purchased In honor of Peter Kriendler | This painting is set in the majestic Teton Mountains near Jackson, Wyoming. Wipfler enjoys working on location, enabling her to capture the emotions as well as the beauty of a lazy spring day in this idyllic pasture. While painting this scene, a badger rustled around near her easel and a coyote wandered through the field. | verso: "Spring Pasture" [ruc:] 46.0695 3 [lrc:] 15 x 24 | lrc: Wipfler | 18.95.2.JPG | pasture | Painting | oil on canvas | Wipfler, Kathy
