NA.111.57 | 1919 | H: 6 in, L: 35 in, width: 15 in | Simplot Collection, Gift of J.R. Simplot | beaded at top: JULY 1919 | Utensils and Implements, Child Care, Training and Education. Wood board with wide rounded top and narrow double pointed bottom covered with braintanned white buckskin, baby pouch and thong lacings are buckskin, serrated edge around head opening. Top half of board covered with layers of muslin completely applique stitch beaded with 4 round flowers in royal blue, greasy blue, clear dark green and cut pink or orange/white heart centers. Top flower has 2 flanking orange/white heart "buds". Flowers connected by clear dark green stems with leaves, all on a white background; worked into background at top in royal beads is: JULY 1919; Edging band has clear dark green diagonals on a greasy blue background; attached at bottom edges of beadwork panel are 8 buckskin thong ties strung with large orange/white hearts, turquoise, royal blue and brass beads and with cowrie shells, a mother of pearl heart and an abalone disc with serrated edges at the ends. Back side has 2 layers of buckskin fringe at top and a buckskin strap tied through the board at about mid-point on each side. Apron is u-shaped braintanned whitebuckskin with serrate edged binding around top and serrate and fringed edging around sides and bottom, machine sewn to apron; buckskin thong ties attach apron to upper sides of head opening so apron covers front lacing; floral motifs on apron are applique stitch beaded on navy wool, appliqued to apron with connecting green beaded stems, motifs include 3 pink petal flowers with light blue borders, 2 red/white hearts and light blue buds with clear dark green leaves outlined in light green, 2 red/white hearts buds with dark green bases and light green outlines, 2 clear dark green leaves with light green outlines and one large dark green leaf with light green outline and a central red/white hearts 4-leaf clover design outlined in light blue. | na.111.57.jpg | NA.111.57.JPG | NA.111.57.jpg | floral | four leaf clover | apron | cradle | brass | wood | wool | muslin | appliqued | Beads | cowrie shell | braintanned | mother of pearl | Buckskin | abalone | Salish

NA.203.1564 | ca. 1890 | L: 28 in, width: 7.75 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Tanned bison hide, cut into narrow apron, leather ties on either end to bind. Cut with approx. 1"W V-d edge at bottom. The bottom V'd edge is finished with the off-white quills, stitched through the hide. Three sections (3), each with a bison tail with hide on, piece of bison hide w/ fur on, top has rawhide piece divided into 3 section each wrapped with un-dyed porcupine quills, and striped with brown fern/plant fiber; each end has hide tie with quilled loop, with partial dew claw attached, all tacked down with 1 piece of leather tie, going through body of objects. On one side of center assemblage is one (1) long (30"+) leather strip wrapped in quills, bent at top to make two strands; one end has small quilled loop attached with hide strip. On opposite side of center are three, thin leather strips, wrapped with quills in sections to resemble stripes, with remnants of white feather fluffs. Between the assemblages are a total of four (4) 2 ¾" L quill and fiber strips sewn into the hide base. There are also two (2) quill-only 1 ½" L square crosses. One quill-wrapped strand on an end with cut hawk feathers and some fluff, attached to leather strip through the base. Same on opposite end, but without feathers. On each end of apron is attached quilled strip, wrapped around, to form a loop with two dew claws also attached. This is object and the dance, etc. are described in Alfred Kroeber's The Arapaho, 1983, pp. 210-226. From Bulletin AMNH [Vol. XVII, 1902]. Portion attached.
