Coe | Large ceremonial drum with painted designs on top, underside and sides. Interior of drum wood wrapped in rawhide with hide fringe around sides, secured with small metal nails. Top surface painted in design of circle split into blue and red halves, yellow center stripe with red dots, all outlined in blue. Paint extends into fringe. Underside design four quadrants, two yellow, one blue, one red. Center is circle, half red, half blue with center yellow stripe. Sides painted with pictographic images of three figures with headdresses and staffs, figure on horse, figure next to painted lodge, buffalo, horses, yellow fish, bear. Coe | Single head drum, with wooden frame. Made from rawhide stretched while wet over the circular wooden frame, that is overlapped and sewn together with sinew through holes drilled in frame. Sinew fastens edge of head to inside of frame in long stiches around the perimeter through holes. Seven (7) cords - 4 rawhide and 3 tanned hide knotted from outside to inside meet in center knot, also braided with a cotton type twine for a hand hold. Recto and sides of frame are painted in dark green and black. Bottom 7" of face is painted over in black with distinct line separating the drum face. On upper corner of black portion is single red circle (1"dia.), possibly representing a rock, not heavy paint. Upper 9" of drum face is green shades with fades. Coe | Single drum head of rawhide stretched over 3 ¾" W wooden frame, one piece bent around and bound together with small round metal fasteners. Rawhide is pulled tightly over the wooden base and double laced through holes on the outside and inside of wood. Eleven (11) rawhide cords are knotted through the outside of the frame, meeting in center in 3" dia. basket weave pattern. Heavy red paint or ochre overall. Interior (verso) of drumhead is covered with 1"dia. ochre dots. The cover is cotton cloth, seamed at top for hide strip to pull through hide strip - machine sewn.
