Sewn together with white string. Beaded with white and dark blue seed beads. Orange horsehair with 10 tin cone dangles. Four dangles missing from horsehair. Left front leg has original string tie and horsehair. Braintanned buckskin body, lazy stitch beaded on top with a center stripe, including the tail, and outer edge bands of pumpkin and royal blue bars. Each half of top then has a green cross on white background, head is pumpkin with royal eyes and nostrils, green picot edge beading around head and body. Grandmothers or other female members of the family made the decorated amulets after the birth of a child. In some instances the baby’s umbilical cord was dried and carried in the amulet. NA.502.198 | L: 4.75 in, Diameter: 1.375 in | Anne T. Black Collection, Gift of Anne Black | Ritual and Recreation, Ritual, Curing and Cult objects. Bi-conoidal buckskin form completely beaded with one clear green bead band around middle; and 3 red/white hearts beaded bands longitudinally which divide the form into 6 triangular sections. Four sections are beaded with 4 royal blue bordered light blue triangles on a yellow background; 2 sections are beaded with 8 royal blue bordered light blue rectangles on a yellow background. At both points are 4 buckskin thongs wrapped with orange dyed porcupine qulls and with pairs of brass bells at the ends.
