1988.8.803 | 1869 | L: 13.625 in, Barrel length: 8 in, H: 5.375 in | Gift of Olin Corporation, Winchester Arms Collection | This Colt Model 1860 Army revolver was made as a percussion and later altered to metallic cartridge by the Thuer conversion. The cylinder is loaded from the front end. Manfactured ca. 1869-1872, about 5,000 were made, including the Colt Models 1849 Pocket, 1851 Navy, 1860 Army, 1861 Navy, 1862 Police and 1862 Pocket Navy. The Thuer conversion revolvers were the first Colts chambered for metallic cartridges. They were designed so that cylinders for percussion caps could also be used. This conversion of Colt revolvers was to avoid infringement on a patent controlled by Smith & Wesson for their revolver cylinders bored end- to- end so that metallic cartridges could be used. | record indicates there is one, but not listed | written record lists model as Navy, not Army (?) | .44 (.44 Thuer centerfire front loading metallic cartridge) | 115437 | 1988.8.803v1.jpg | 1988.8.803v2.jpg | 1988.8.803v1.jpg | 1988.8.803v2.jpg | revolver | metallic cartridge | firearm | trigger | round | one-piece | plain | grip | walnut | open | sights | barrel | stock | Colt Patent Firearms Manufacturing Co., Hartford, Connecticut | American

1988.8.3930 | ca. 1863 | Barrel length: 7.125 in | Savage Revolving Firearms Co. Navy Model Revolver. Mfg. 1861-1864-65. About 20,000 made. Six-shot. Hammer slightly offset in frame. A large trigger guard contains two triggers. The front, or upper one drops the hammer. The lower one, a ring trigger, cocks the hammer and revolves the cylinder. Pulling back on this trigger also causes the cylinder to move backwards, away from a bevel on the rear of the barrel, before the cylinder starts to revolve. Releasing the ring trigger permits the cylinder to move forward to form a gas-tight joint with the barrel. U.S. government purchased 11,984 of this model during the Civil War. Of this number about 10,000 used by the army. Savage dates: North & Savage 1856-1860 (Henry S. North & Edward Savage); Savage Revolving Firearms Co. 1860-1866. This revolver has a detachable shoulder stock, marked F.D. Bliss. Maybe a later addition to the piece. | 1988.8.3930.v1.jpg | 1988.8.3930.v2.jpg | revolver | percussion | firearm | brass | trigger | plain | sights | stock | walnut grips | v-notch rear | octagon | cone front | barrel | bead front | two piece | open | Savage Navy Model Revolver, with Wooden Shoulder Stock Maker: Savage Revolving Firearms Co.; Middletown, CT Serial Number: Not Serially Numbered Caliber: .36 (6 shot) Date: ca. 1863 Catalog Number: 1988.8.3930 Gift of Olin Corporation Winchester Arms Collection | Savage Revolving Firearms Co., Middletown, Conn.

1988.8.702 | c.1901 | L: 11.5 in, Barrel length: 5 in | Gift of Olin Corporation, Winchester Arms Collection | yes | The first Colt DA .38 were issued to the miliatry in 1892 and six different models were produced through 1903. Only minor differences existed between the modesl. The Colt New DA saw extensive use in the SAW and Philippine campaigns. the Army and Navy Ordnance Boards favored the Colt .38 DA because of its lighter weight, ease in loading and ejecting accuracy and the ability to use it either as a SA or DA weapon. In battle, however, the .38 cartridge lacked the power to be effective and the Army returned to .45 caliber pistols. (Severn, Colt Firearms and Steffen, Horse Soldier, vol.
