NA.403.259 | ca. 1870 | L: 18.5 in, width: 11.5 in, H: 7 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Two thick (1 ½"W) rounded wood pieces (almost U shaped), attached to front and rear of two wooden side slats. All covered with rawhide, wet, and stitched with sinew for a tight cover. The topes of the U shapes are covered in two long single rows of brass tacks, and one shorter row at top of the U form. Four (not original) rawhide straps (1 ½" with some cow hair still on) are looped on itself and bound with a round rawhide cutout, with a leather tie attached to one side - for a belly strap (?). Stirrup attached to each side with long leather ties. The stirrups are made of wood covered tightly with rawhide and sinew sewn. Entire seat of saddle is beaded with a mirror design of a buffalo and calf standing beside each other; white beaded background, blue trim around exterior; back and front of seat are trimmed in blue wool and red tradecloth with strips at the end, held down with round brass tacks. Design in white background of 2 red triangles trimmed in blue facing each other. Metal rings at front for leather stirrup straps. Stirrups have a beaded design only around the front, the rest is leather. Coe | Wood pieces Y-shaped with tops carved into horizontal discs attached to wood slat pieces by means of rawhide. Pommel and cantle are wrapped also with tanned hide. Pommel has fringe on the front hook. Red, white and green bead strip on cantle; white and blue bead strip on pommel. Two wood stirrups attached at either side of saddle by means of long tanned straps. Stirrups have red wool cloth decorative flaps with white beads work and a geometric pattern of light blue, white, dark blue, and yellow. A: High arched wood tree with raised design (heart with an arrow through it, pointing up) on pommel and cantle covered with black goat skin. Black cow skin covered seat with two ironbands nailed lengthwise on seat. Black cowskin jockeys with red cowskin border on sides and bottom and a black cowskin strip at top through which jockey is nailed to saddle. Hand carved stirrup and cinch strap holes through bottom of wood frame with leather thongs through front and rear holes. Right front thong is looped around a folded band of black leather, left rear has cinch strap attached. B. Black cowhide pad for saddle, butterfly shaped with expanded sides, slit in underside for adding and removing straw padding; pad is to be strapped over saddle. C. Left stirrup, cast iron stirrup with embossed design of cross hatching and spirals on edges. Leather strap with a black painted silver metal buckle. Leather is worn and torn on saddle, especially on edges. Pad is worn, has been patched in center front, slit has torn at both ends. Coe | Possibly a pack saddle. Two forked pieces of bone or antler attached to front and rear of two wooden slats. Covered with stretched, wetted rawhide, and sewn with sinew. The rawhide and sinew are probably what holds the bone and wood together. Two sets of holes drilled though front and back of both wood side panels; three of these holes have leather ties and large leather straps with metal rings attached.
