1988.8.468 | ca. 1895 | L: 10.25 in, Barrel length: 3.375 in | Gift of Olin Corporation, Winchester Arms Collection | Bergmann Model 1894 Semiautomatic Pistol. Mfg. 1894 to ca. 1898. Number made unknown. Blowback action. Box magazine forward of the trigger guard. Magazine was loaded with a clip, or could also be loaded with loose cartridges. Bolt operated within the frame and had a rather long travel. The action was not too reliable. Some of the early pistols were made without an extractor, the empty cartridge shells being simply blown out. One of the early automatic pistols, following the Borchardt by about a year and the Schwarlose by a few months. Bergmann was one of the most prolific of arms designers. (See Automatic Weapons of The World by Melvin M. Johnson and Charles T. Haven. Manufactured 1924-1937, a total of 957 were made. It is similar to the Model 1913, and, like that model, resembles the Belgian Clement pistol with its streamlined appearance. This pistol was used in the W.R.A.
