NA.302.158 | ca. 1875 | L: 70 in, width: 56 in | Gift of Harris A. and Lee Thompson | Chief's Blanket style, Man's wearing blanket. Late variation of Second Phase Blanket. Ex-collection E.G. Woolworth. Acquired by the present owner (donor) thru retail purchase from Don Watson Trading Post, Cortez, CO. Firmly and smoothly executed blanket weave having 9 warp and 36 to 48 weft threads to the linear inch approx. Workmanship excellent. Shows normal wear. Very good condition. Lazy lines numerous and prominent. Second Phase Chief's Blanket, Bayeta, indigo, with black and white stripes, with central stripe being small strips in indigo and red, with white and indigo rectangles. (Tagged EG Woolworth No. 3 1715 Locust St.) Dated at 1875 by JBW because of presence of three and four ply yarns. Following per JBW. Crimson is fine ravelled S Spin conchineal. Firmly and smoothly executed blanket weave having 9 warp and 40 to 62-64 weft threads to the linear inch depending on yarn type. Lazy lines inconspicuous. Workmanship is excellent. Shows normal wear but is in very good condition. Pure early classic design Saxony wearing blanket, bands or stripes of white, red, probably indigo, with nine-spot theme in yellow, serrated six-sides central figure in center strip, and all the others two-three-or four sided (partial). Some re-twisted two ply ravelled yarn. Three ply is Cochineal, orange four ply is respun ravelled flannel. Orange has bled into the yellow in places. JBW dates at about 1870 based on the materials. Very firmly and smoothly executed weave characteristic of a "Germantown" and having 7 warp and 50-52 weft threads to the linear inch. Lazy lines are tight and inconspicuous. Workmanship is excellent. Very good condition. Selvage cords broken in places, a very few small holes, corner tassels largely missing. Germantown red with most of piece covered with interlocking large serrated diamonds in black, Saltillo style, edged in white, Centers of the diamond part contain crosses in green, purple and black. There is a small area of broken warps near one end, minor color loss but excellent condition. Bayeta, interlocking serrated diamonds, outlined in blue and white. English and American flannel. JBW White Purple (Blue), scarlet Germantown. Never used. Heavy late ravelled plied yarn, warp four ply, scarlet coarse ravelled. Dated 1870s. Shows normal wear; selvage cords broken in places, corner tassels missing, a few small holes, minor damage at the ends, very good condition. Workmanship is excellent. Lazy lines numerous but tight and inconspicuous. (Probably late 1870s). Large loosely planned serrated interlocking diamond design, which contains smaller design elements - bars, broken serrated triangle parts, etc. in blue and white. Good condition. JBW dates .
