1988.8.2130 | 1864-1866 | L: 13 in, Barrel length: 7.5 in, H: 5 in | Gift of Olin Corporation, Winchester Arms Collection | Although within the serial range (1,250-4,200) of the second type "Colt Navy" revolvers, this example illustrates the prime feature distinguishing the third type of production--the small fully rounded triggerguard. From old ARGUS record W.1525: The Metropolitan Arms Co. Navy revolver was manufactured 1864-1866; about 6063 were made. It was a six-shot, single action arm which was a copy of the Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver. It has a standard cylinder roll scene of an engagement between the Union fleet and Confederate land batteries at New Orleans, April, 1862. No U.S. government contracts are known for this model. Many consider this a secondary martial arm; all Metropolitan revolvers were basically copies of Colt models. | [on top of barrel:] METROPOLITAN ARMS CO.
