Ghost Dance tobacco bag made of deer hide, beads (red, blue, green light blue and white), quills (yellow), bells, feather and feather shafts on fringe and clay pigments (yellow and red). Fringes on bottom of bag have red paint on the ends. Bells are on fringes. White beaded background, green trim on top and red trim on bottom, with beaded figures: blue human with red plant figure, red bird, red plant, red cross, green turtle with red line down back. Perpendicular strips are white, red and green with dark blue arrows pointing downward. Verso has red figure with blue stemmed pipe, green birds, light blue triangles on top of red trim. On bag there is a red arrow pointing downward toward a circle, and it has blue feathers. Four flaps hanging from top of bag have dark blue and light blue arrows pointing downward. [scroll]/[diamond-shaped design]/[diamond] FORT UNION. [diamond]/[arrows]/JAN 1 1860./[line of dots]/[pipe with hanging feathers] | Structures and Furnishings, Status Symbols. Twill cloth rectangle, painted brown background with decoration in red, white and yellow paint from top to bottom (see inscription field), probably painted by a sign painter. Rectangle is bound on sides and bottom with red wool. It and a muslin cover printed with brown and red circles and brown wavy lines are nailed at the top to a wood rod with cone shaped ends. Attached to bottom edge of banner are four narrow frayed strips of brown and white gingham.
