Ghost dance dress - white buckskin dress, sinew sewn, rectangular strips pieced into shoulders, yoke/sleeves sewn to skirt, triangular extensions sewn at lower side seams to give skirt more flare; self fringe at side seams, added fringe at sleeve ends, self and added fringe at hem. Upper 3/4 of dress is painted blue with blue outlined natural buckskin stars in rows, painted green band separate blue upper dress from bottom 1/4 which is painted yellow-groups of 4 line and circle designs extend into yellow from green band, bottom edge has a red line with triangles pointing up, outlined with blue, triangular extensions have 2 rows of blue dots and 1 row of red dots at bottom. Yoke has laced-in fringe across front and back, fringes are trimmed with mescal seeds, ermine tails and feet, dyed red breath feathers and satin ribbons in fushia, blue, golden yellow on back, red, blue, faded light blue and faded pink on front, front also has an advertising mirror from Herbert Spencer cigars and a sinew wrapped lock of black hair. Hand-tanned elk hide, fringed on neck flaps, shoulder area, wrist area, bottom edge of shirt, down sides of shirt, and down back of arms. Painted in red, light blue, dark blue and green pigments. White stars with red line surrounding them, dark blue birds, dark blue and white magpies, white turtle with red blocks on its back, background of shirt is light blue. Fringes on shirt are all painted green. Red human figures on front and rear. Neck flaps have plants and pipes, figure's chest has crescent shape and feather on top of head. Colors are orange, yellow, purple and green. Fringe decorated with red quills wrapped around it. One long piece at the bottom has green and red quills and a fluff at the end. Peter Kriendler | JACK, O'SULLIVAN'S | Cowboy boots, mens custom made; scallop top black leather shafts with rolled red leather top edge and red over black leather boot straps on each side, metal crossed revolvers decorations pinned at top fronts, shafts are inlaid with colored leathers-white diamonds, white stars, yellow crescent moons, red butterfly wings with yellow dots, yellow butterfly wings with red dots, blue butterfly wings with green dots and orange butterfly bodies, inserts are outlined with decorative stitching in white, blue, red and yellow, cut into black leather in top front between revolvers: JACK; inset in white in top back of shafts: 21' front of boots are gray leather with heel caps and wing tips of dark burgundy inlaid with yellow butterflies with red dots outline stitched in blue, edges of burgundy leather are single row perforated with one double and one single row of blue stitching; hand lasted leather soles-machine stitched around foot and hand pegged in 2 rows along each side of shank 2-1/4" high boot heel is set ahead of side seam and heel is undershot with a slight flare out at the bottom; rubber caps on heels have 5 holes for nails and have raised lettering: O'SULLIVAN'S; inside of shaft has a white leather reinforcing patch at back. 1.69.2533 | back width: 12.25 in | Man's leather vest; smooth tan leather vest with one pocket and 2 buttonholes on each side of front; edges, seams and pockets are machine sewn with dark brown thread; front is beaded with 3 blue stars (2 have black middle, 1 has white middle), a blue crescent moon, a white star with red middle on each pocket and a blue and white banded border on each side in large seed beads; back is beaded with 2 blue and white stars, a red heart outline, 2 appliqued orange, deep purple and clear leaf-shapes, 2 crossed tomahawks with white tops and red handles and 3 appliqued raised beaded flowers, mostly large seed beads but some small ones; blue and white beaded band border continues around armholes and along bottom edge; back shoulder seams are covered with a blue and red beaded band; inside edges are hand-faced with brown cotton; possibly of Sioux make for a white man. Possibly once belonged to Buffalo Bill. 1.67.553 | L: 33.125 in, bag width: 11.625 in | Credit line: Gift of The Coe Foundation, Description: Woodlands bandolier bag; navy wool tradecloth pouch with loom beaded front panel of stars and diamonds in blue, pink, clear kelly green, clear red and red/white hearts on white ground; tassels have a loom beaded strip followed by 2 strings of large green, purple and light blue pony beads with red and purple yarn tassels; sides and top of front panel are bordered with greasy blue and white net woven bands; top of beaded panel and top edge of pocket are edged with red taffeta as is top of front panel where strap joins it; strap is loom beaded in a connecting diamond design in clear kelly green, light blue, pink, white, clear red and red/white hearts on light orange ground; outer edges of bag and strap are bound with green cloth which carries over to make the backing of the bag and strap. Condition: Fragile; wool is moth eaten; edges are faded and frayed; four tassels have lost their yarn and pony beads and some of the loom beading; whatever was attached at both bottom corners is gone. Origin: Original Studio Collection of artist Frederic S. Remington.
