NA.403.240 | ca. 1880 | L: 18.75 in, width: 14.75 in | The Paul Dyck Plains Indian Buffalo Culture Collection, acquired through the generosity of the Dyck family and additional gifts of the Nielson Family and the Estate of Margaret S. Coe | Tanned moose hide, stuff, embroidered with glass seed beads onto hide piece, then attached to four corners. White background with abstract floral and leaf designs in dark blue, dirty yellow, red, deep red, light blue, dark green and yellow - all sinew sewn. On hanging flaps are geometric checked diamonds and checkered rows in same seed bead colors with addition of rose and black. Designs on two front and two rear corners and flaps are alike. Separate central flap of tanned hide with pinked edges, also overlays sides to cover saddle rings. Flaps are backed in brown calico cloth, have 2 "tongues" of wool cloth outlined in seed beads, edged in same brown calico, all edged in doubled white seed beads. Dangles hang from flaps strung with brown translucent, cut glass tube beads with yarn tassels. Saddle rings attached to both sides and remnants of belly strap from commercial tanned belt leather. Possibly a trade item to the Blackfoot, as they favored checkerboard design on the flaps. | na.403.240.jpg | pad saddle | wool cloth | yarn | Cotton cloth | glass beads | hair | metal ring | tanned moose hide | sinew | commercial tanned hide | Northern Plains | Nehilawe | Niitsítapi | Canada | Plains Cree | Blackfoot
