Just what did they look like?

With the stories of the West, I always wonder what this or that character looked like. Sometimes there was a camera, but many times a painter or sculptor captured an image so that we can "put a face with a name." Take a look at these portraits. For those whose names you've heard before, are you surprised at how they look? There were some surprises for me!

Weiss Memorial Fund Purchase | McGary, a native of Cody, Wyoming, was selected to create a monumental sculpture of Chief Washakie as a gift from the people of the state of Wyoming to the United States Capitol. Two editions of smaller-sized versions of the portrait were produced to support the project. Revered for statesmanship and respected in battle, Chief Washakie (1798-1900) led the Eastern Shoshone people and signed the treaty creating a three million acre reservation in Wyoming for his people. "I fought to keep our land, our water, and our hunting grounds. Today, education is the weapon my people will need to protect them," stated Chief Washakie. | [lower right rear] Dave McGary/1999 10/50; [front of base] "Chief Washakie"/Dave McGary | Video present, stored in MRL | 3.00.jpg | 3.00.jpg | 3.00.web.jpg | Chief Washakie | Indian | Sculpture | patina | bronze | pigment | McGary, Dave
