Adventures in babysitting
Native Americans used (and still do today) cradleboards to carry their infant children. Below is a selection of the cradleboards we have here at the Center of the West. The firm frame supports baby's spine, and a footrest keeps her from sliding out! The rounded cover at the top provides shade in the sun—or when covered, protects against the elements in colder climates. Naturally, the headpiece also provides extra head protection in case anything bumps against the cradleboard. The inside is padded with a lining of fresh plant fibers that serves as a disposable diaper. (Some linings could be cleaned and reused.) Many plant materials also have antiseptic properties that also nurture baby's skin. Do you have a baby in your house? Do you think a cradleboard would come in handy?
