His sculpture of a cavalry soldier galloping astride his horse, the American flag flying above his head, is a timeless image symbolic of liberty, freedom, and pride. By painting the bronze, Jackson enhanced the drama of the composition, bringing the figures to life. | bottom rear of bronze: [copyright symbol] Harry Jackson 1983 / [copyright symbol] Harry Jackson 1983 / TFP bottom front of bronze: Dearest Moya, Sound the Charge! / Love Harry front of base: THE FLAGBEARER / HARRY JACKSON | bottom rear of bronze: [copyright symbol] Harry Jackson 1983 / [copyright symbol] Harry Jackson 1983 / TFP | 12.02.5.jpg | Sculpture | polychrome | bronze | Jackson, Harry

Since the Renaissance, bronze sculptures have usually been "patinaed," brushed with an acid. Different acids produce different colors, such as the greens, browns, and blackes typically associated with bronze sculptures. In addition to patinaed versions, Jackson likes to create painted editions of many of his works. For his painted sculptures, tempera paints are applied to the surface either to evoke realistic object colors or to convey an expressionist approach. To learn more, see Harry Jackson's publication Lost Wax Bronze Casting. This book traces the method of producing a bronze with Pony Express chosen to illustrate the process. | Top of base, front: FOR THE COES OF CODY/DEAR and LOYAL FRIENDS/c. 41.09 | 2009 | H: 9 in, width: 12 in | Western Art | Gift of the artist | In this work, John comments about the definition of "Western art" -- a reference to art historical terms of Western art as Europeon and American art. Yet, we often call art of the American West -- "western" art. In art history courses about, and in displays about, western American art, we so often leave out the greater context of art history as a whole -- John brings us back to this point, celebrating the long history of art -- Fraser related to Caravaggio. | LRC: GIARRIZZO 09 | LRC: James Earle Fraser | 1876-1953 | End of the Trail | 1894 Re-worked (illegible, page cut off); LLC: 95 BBHC (illegible, page cut off); verso: LL Giarrizzo 2009 for Whitney Gallery BBHC | One (1) multimedia (college on paper), 9 x 12 inches, title: Western Art, artist John Giarrizzo | verso: Giarrizzo 2009 for Whitney Gallery BBHC | 41.09.jpg | James Earl Frazier | religious | End of the Trail | Drawing | Collage | acrylic | paper | ink | Collage | pen | Giarrizzo, John
