Hood cradle - tanned with red polka dot cotton cloth lining. Completely covered with wrapped quill work design with wrapped quill work tab on top back. Bead border lane along hood edge, lace up front. The cradle’s soft hide body is covered almost entirely with rows of dyed porcupine quills. The color red, sacred to the Lakota, was meant to protect and bless the child. Coe | One piece, back seamed, hard sole tanned hide moccasins with straight cut ankle cuff with two (2) ties at top of cuff. Attached, 3" wide tongue with beadwork along edge. Vamp has 14 rows with three groups of 3 rows; two groups of 2 single rows and 1 single - of red dyed quillwork with 3 full purple and yellow box designs, and 2 partial of same. Single row goes around perimeter with two rows around heel. NA.205.86 | L: 10.25 in, width: 3.75 in | Dress and Adornment, Status Symbols and Insignia of Office. Beaded crown. Light blue, red, black and white bead band. Front has band meeting a small circle on each end with a center star in blue, white, orange, red and yellow. A set red "gem-like" stone or bead takes center. A large semi-circular "crown" extends from behind the small circles. A flower is in the center with a set stone in the middle and set red stones on each petal. Red outlined black and white feathers "radiate" from behind the flower. Band ends have bare leather with two metal-clasped holes. Leather strip is tied through to adjust size. Two small circular beaded pieces rest on back, near ends. Beaded in green, orange, red, white and blue star designs. Braintanned white buckskin, 2 hides style with side gussets and pierced bottom, all thread seam. Yoke is long lazy stitch beaded on both sides in pink and light blue bands with 5 vertical dividers of green and yellow. Around sleeve ends and along top of bands is a strip of clear dark red beads with some intersperced yellow. Sleeves have added fringing. Along bottom edge of bands are buckskin thong fringes trimmed with green and red lined clear basket beads and ending in brass shoe buttons. Shoulders have yellow colored buckskin strips and pink beads lazystitched over seams, front has one center and two shoulder buckskin thong fringes trimmed with amber basket beads and brass hawk bells. Lower skirt has a row of buckskin fringes trimmed with single dark green basket beads and a row that in front is trimmed with white bugle beads, bottom edge has added fringe and has a strip of clear dark red beads immediately above fringe. Coe | Boy's shirt, Poncho style, open sides with ties. sewn sleeves, self-fringed on edges and cuffs. Triangular neck tab on back. Long fringes added to braod strips of hide, serving as a base for the porcupine quill embroidery on sleeves. Similar strips extend down the front and back. Quillwork is plaited using multiple quills, analine dyed orange, blue, and red dyed quills -----. Open V-cut neck in front. Brain-tanned buckskin uppers, soles and ankle extensions with rectangular buffalo-hide tongues, pieced at heel on one end of ankle wrap, all sinew sewn. Fully beaded vamp has bands of light blue alternating with bands of clear kelly green with orange and royal rectangles and orange with clear kelly and greasy yellow rectangles; bottom edge of vamp and around outside bottom edge is a band of greasy yellow with red and white rectangles.
