Indian With Tomahawk
William E. Weiss Contemporary Art Fund Purchase
Fritz Scholder created a series of Indian paintings in the years 1967 through 1980. He did not adhere to the traditional, idealized interpretation of the Indian as the noble savage. Instead, Scholder sought new and innovative pictorial representations to convey the harsher realities of the Indian world. As seen in this painting, the artist used bold, unnatural colors and distorted the image with loose painterly brushwork to create his personal vision of Indian reality.
