In western art of the past, women often seem to be absent, or when they do appear, they play passive roles. In contemporary western art, women have more prominent positions both as subjects and as artists. The cowgirl has become an heroic figure. Not merely a lovely companion, the cowgirl here provides the action, using a rope with prowess and with humor.
