Remarks:
Ritual and Recreation/Smoking and Narcotics. Tobacco basket and lid: Round twined basket convex sides, flat bottom, natural tan hazel or iris and yellow pine or tule root, full twist overlaid with 7 stacked diamond motifs in reddish-brown and black on a natural yellow background, reddish-brown and black bands around top and bottom, bottom has a raised ring, wrapped in reddish-brown and yellow with reddish-brown "petal" around the outside, handle is muslin wrapped with reddish-brown and yellow fibers. Round flat twined lid has a raised ring near the center and around the outside edge wrapped in reddish-brown and yellow; alternating yellow and reddish-brown bands overall with main brown band containing yellow rectangles, lid sides have two rows of open spaces. Broken along bottom side edge. || Willow or hazel foundation. wefts are spruce root. The design is a full twist overlay using maidenhair fern and woodwardia fern dyed red with red alder bark. Three strand twining at the start and one three strand twining at the edge of base. A fabric handle is wrapped with beargrass and woodwardia fern. The lid has open work twining on the edge that fits into the opening of the basket. The basket is fragile, with loss on the handle and breaks on the base (Bryn Potter: 7/2013- AMD).
