Gloss:
Waddell distills images of western animals into basic shapes. This modern artistic approach simplifies objects to their essences. The application of paint in dramatic gestures reminds the viewer, however, of the artist's role in creating the image, rather than replicating something that exists. Although contemporary in approach, Waddell's powerful bison shape shares an affinity with Albert Bierstadt's nineteenth-century image, Buffalo Head, which also focuses on the shape of the animal.
