An admirer of the work of Charles Russell, Borein first met the Montana artist in New York City. Later Russell helped Borein get an assignment for advertisements of the Calgary Stampede and Borein traveled with the Russells to that rodeo. Afterwards he went out sketching Indians with Russell.
