Remarks:
Mahogany desk, five drawers with two additional small compartment on desk top, American Federal style, limited carved scrolled craftsmanship, foot rest along bottom, c. 1898-1905. The desk was originally owned by Nathaniel Salsbury, who was William F. Cody's impresario. Rebecca Salsbury James was Mr. Oakes' aunt and the daughter of Nathaniel Salsbury. The desk was given by Mrs. James to Mr. Oakes prior to her death in Taos, New Mexico a number of years ago.
