Gollings, like Charles M. Russell, worked as a cowboy when he was young and later turned to art for a career. Russell's paintings of action-packed gunbattles near saloons directly influenced this work. By painting a night scene, Gollings indicates that he was also aware of Frederic Remington's nocturnes.
