This experimental lever action, repeating carbine features the Briggs magazine system as patented October, 1866 (U.S. 58937). This loading device features a sliding magazine tube and receiver spring catch. When the catch is released, the magazine can be drawn forward so that cartridges can be charged into it immediately in front of the receiver. This magazine loading system was intended as an improvement over the front-loading Henry system. It was superseded by Nelson King's patented loading port in the receiver. This type of loading system was never put into production.
