This is a U.S. rifle-musket Model 1861, made under contract by the Whitney Arms Co. This company had contracts with both the U.S. government and the State of Connecticut, c. 1861-1863. 15,000 were made for the U.S. government and 14,000 for the State of Connecticut. The plant was called the Whitneyville Armory from 1798 to 1863.
