Gloss:
This is one of a matched pair of duelling pistols. The back-action lock featured is one in which the mainspring is located behind the hammer, rather than in front of it as was standard. The advantage of the back-action lock was that it could be mortised into the wrist of the stock, thus fore-stock could be lightened.
