The Remington Model 1865 (also called Model 1866), rolling block, single shot, breech-loading U.S. Navy pistol was manufactured 1866-1870. About 6500 are thought to have been made. This model was the first of the Remington rolling block pistols. The name rolling block comes from the pivoting action of the breech block. It was a very strong action, locked and supported by the hammer when in the fired position. The action was designed and patented by Joseph Rider, a famous arms inventor who served principally with Remington's.
