In 1812, Pauly patented, in France, the first breech loader which fired an obturating (forming gas seal) center fire cartridge.A premeasured powder charge and projectile were inserted into a brass cartridge case and a pellet primer was placed on the case base. This breech-loading single shot target pistol has a dummy hammer used as a cocking piece.
