The first Colt DA .38 were issued to the miliatry in 1892 and six different models were produced through 1903. Only minor differences existed between the modesl. The Colt New DA saw extensive use in the SAW and Philippine campaigns. the Army and Navy Ordnance Boards favored the Colt .38 DA because of its lighter weight, ease in loading and ejecting accuracy and the ability to use it either as a SA or DA weapon. In battle, however, the .38 cartridge lacked the power to be effective and the Army returned to .45 caliber pistols. (Severn, Colt Firearms and Steffen, Horse Soldier, vol. III)
